Dr. Derek Novacek is an Assistant Project Scientist in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and a Fellow at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. His research focuses on the sociocultural factors that contribute to mental health disparities and promote mental health equity in racial/ethnic minorities as well as individuals who have experienced homelessness. Outside of his primary responsibilities, Dr. Novacek works part-time as a therapist at Therapy Lab, a group private practice based in downtown Los Angeles. Dr. Regina Pally is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who has been in private practice for over 35 years, with a special interest in parents and couples. For 25 years she studied and wrote about neuroscience for mental health professionals. Most recently she has dedicated herself to working in the community to improve the lives of children and their families. In 2008 she founded the Center for Reflective Communities, whose mission is to ‘promote healthy child development, by strengthening the relationship bonds that children have with all those who care for them through an emphasis on reflective thinking.
The current focus of her writing is Reflective Parenting. Her latest book ‘The Reflective Parent: How to Do Less and Relate More with Your Kids’ emphasizes that relationships matter most in the life of a child and provides parents with the skills for building positive relationships with their children. The goal is for parents to feel less anxious and more competent as a parent, while at the same time feeling confident that they are giving their child all the necessary ingredients for healthy development.

Dr. Michael J. Gitlin MD is Distinguished Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is currently the Director of the Adult Division in the Department of Psychiatry, Medical Director of the Neuropsychiatric Behavioral Health Services and Director of the Mood Disorders Clinic at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital. From 1980 until 2004, he was the Medical Director of the Aftercare Clinic, a research clinic in schizophrenia. He is the author of over 160 scientific articles and book chapters as well as five books, including: two editions of a solo authored psychopharmacology textbook written for nonphysician therapists entitled "The Psychotherapist's Guide to Psychopharmacology” published by the Free Press, the coauthor of “Psychotropic Drugs and Women” with Dr. Victoria Hendrick, the coauthor of “Clinician’s Guide to Bipolar Disorder: Integrating Pharmacology with Psychotherapy”, with Dr. David Miklowitz and the coauthor of “The Essential Guide to Lithium Treatment” with Dr. Michael Bauer. He served as Chief of Staff at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital from 1997-1999. Among his awards are: Distinguished Educator Award in Teaching from the UCLA Department of Psychiatry (1999), Outstanding Housestaff Teaching Award, 1994 and 2008, Teacher of the Year from the Psychiatric Times in 2002; Dadone Clinical Teaching award from the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 2010; and the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine award from the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 2010.
Today we draw from his over 40 years of clinical work and talk about the shifts of treatment of mood disorders over time.

Dr. Wu is a board-certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist with over twenty years of clinical experience treating a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses. She specializes in childhood/adolescent developmental struggles, ADHD, and mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. Dr. Wu earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed her adult psychiatry residency at University of California, San Francisco, and her child/adolescent fellowship at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute.

Regina is the author of Psychic Debris, Crowded Closets: The Relationship between the Stuff in your Head and What's Under your Bed (3rd ed., 2017, Purple Books Pubs.), and as audio-book on Audible. Dr. Lark earned her Ph.D. in history from the University of Southern California. For fun she plays golf and tennis, and she writes goofy songs about clutter.

Tania Israel is a Professor in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Israel teaches about helping skills, leadership, and community collaboration, among other things. She has facilitated educational programs and difficult dialogues about a range of topics, including abortion, law enforcement, religion, and sexual orientation. Beyond Your Bubble: How to Connect Across the Political Divide, Skills and Strategies for Conversations That Work (APA, 2020) grew out of Dr. Israel’s skill-building workshop that she developed and delivered to hundreds of participants following the 2016 election. It draws on her strengths as a psychologist and community organizer to prepare people to engage in dialogue across political lines. Dr. Israel’s honors include 2019 Congressional Woman of the Year (CA 24th District), Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Award for Excellence in Mental Health from the California Asian & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, and Emerging Leader Award from the APA Committee on Women in Psychology.

Dr. Rabkin is a psychiatrist practicing with CalPsychiatry. She is a board-certified general psychiatrist, working with a variety of patients in her outpatient practice. While she specializes in medication management, she uses a multimodal approach with clients that draws upon psychotherapy, mindfulness work, Yoga psychology, and other integrative practices.
Today we talk about our shared specialty of psycho-oncology. We talk about the interplay between the biological, psychological and social factors that occur during the diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment phases in one’s cancer journey. We also talk about the impact that this has on the family system and how cancer not only effects the individual, but their family and loved ones as well.

Dr. Judy Ho is an avid researcher and is a two-time recipient of the National Institute of Mental Health Services Research Award. She hosts an active research program to improve mental health care for high-need populations and is the chair of the Institutional Review Board at Pepperdine University. Her treatment approaches integrate the scientific principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. She often speaks at national and local events including research, clinical, and corporate conferences and workshops for organizations and schools.
Dr. Judy received her bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Business Administration from UC Berkeley, and her masters and doctorate from SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. She completed a National Institute of Mental Health sponsored fellowship at UCLA's Semel Institute.
